New Mumbai rabbi highlights worldwide Jewish mission

(Reuters) - As they prepare for the High Holidays this week, the Jewish community in India's financial capital Mumbai has good news to report two years after its rabbi there died in an Islamist assault on the city.
A new rabbi has arrived, a new community center is open and their worldwide Chabad-Lubavitch movement is once again at full strength in Mumbai pursuing its mission to support Jewish life wherever Jews can be found. |

A Torah was dedicated in the birthplace of Communist leader Vladimir Lenin.
More than 500 people gathered Tuesday to celebrate the completion of the first Torah scroll for the city of Ulyanovsk, Russia, according to Chabad.org. |

Pleasanton community celebrates birth of a new Torah

PLEASANTON - More than 300 community members on Sunday helped celebrate the completion of a new Torah, the first created specially for the Tri-Valley area.
Commissioned by Chabad of the Tri-Valley, work on the Torah began in February and was done by scribes in Israel and Colorado, said Rabbi Raleigh Resnick. The Torah was returned to Pleasanton, where Rabbi Moshe Liberow, of Colorado, finished the last of the Torah's more than 300,000 letters at the ceremony at the Pleasanton Senior Center. |

In recent years, Chabad-run groups have done remarkably well when it comes to online philanthropy contests.
Chabad representatives were well-represented in last year’s Jewish Federations of North America Jewish Community Heroes contest. In January, Chabad’s Michigan-based Friendship Circle, an organization dedicated to helping children with special needs, won $100,000 when it came in third place in the Chase Community Giving Challenge on Facebook. Earlier this summer, 17 Chabad programs across the United States each received $20,000 in the second running of the Chase challenge. |

New Jersey woman dies in Nepal crash

(JTA) -- A Jewish woman from New Jersey died in a plane crash in Nepal on her 30th birthday.
Irina Shekhets reportedly traveled to Nepal on a spiritual journey and was heading to a hiking trip to a Mount Everest base camp when the 15-seat, twin-engine plane crashed Aug. 23 about 50 miles south of Kathmandu. Fourteen people were killed, including four Americans. |

New Mumbai Chabad House under construction

(JTA) -- Construction has begun on a new Mumbai Chabad House.
The building will include a synagogue, kosher kitchen, mikveh and educational spaces, according to a Chabad-Lubavitch official in New York.
It also will include a memorial to directors Rabbi Gavriel and Rivkah Holtzberg and four visitors who were killed in the Nariman House in the November 2008 attacks on several Mumbai sites, including luxury hotels, a train station and a popular cafe. More than 170 people were killed in the attacks. |
